⚗️ Mechanism of Action

Mechanism of Action

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection (BWFI) is a sterile aqueous vehicle — not a pharmacologically active compound — containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as the active preservative. The bacteriostatic mechanism involves disruption of bacterial cell membrane integrity, inhibition of membrane-bound respiratory enzymes, and interference with active transport, preventing microbial proliferation without inducing sterility.

The 0.9% benzyl alcohol concentration is the pharmacopeially established threshold providing effective bacteriostasis against common contaminating organisms. This enables multi-dose use — the primary advantage over sterile water for injection (SWFI) in research settings.

BWFI is mildly hypotonic and acidic relative to physiological pH. Water is produced via distillation or reverse osmosis to meet WFI specifications, with endotoxin content controlled to ≤0.25 EU/mL per USP standards.

📋 Research Applications
